The Unravelling

A new play for the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe

You want stories? We'll tell you stories...
For what is life but a sprawling mass of threads
Whirling away to some distant vanishing point?

2009's youngest Fringe performers were once again a group of Bengali girls from East London. After the sell-out success of 2007’s MEHNDI NIGHT, and last year’s critically acclaimed STOLEN SECRETS, Mulberry Theatre Company stormed the 2009 Fringe, wowed the critics, and romped home with a clutch of rave reviews and a Scotsman Fringe First Award!

In an east London fabric shop, a dying mother challenges her daughters to weave her the greatest tale, using nothing more than pieces of cloth. Little do they realise that their prize is far more than the shop itself – it is the power to write their own futures.

As the daughters’ Unravelling begins, the shop fills with their creations – demons, zombies, talking fish ... and some sinister reflections of themselves. Eventually their imaginations begin to strain at the fabric of reality itself ...

Inspired by the rapturous reception to last year’s STOLEN SECRETS, Mulberry’s students take their physical storytelling aesthetic one step further under the expert guidance of LISPA trained director Camille Cettina, with a stunning new play from the school’s award-winning playwright-in-residence Fin Kennedy (Protection, Locked In, How To Disappear Completely and Never Be Found).

The show has already been tipped by Guardian theatre critic Lyn Gardner as one of her picks of the 2009 Fringe.

THE UNRAVELLING: a bold existential fable about one mother’s legacy to her daughters, and the power of mythology to change your life.

The finest stories, like the finest fabrics, are nothing less than lessons in living.

‘One of the best writer/education partnerships there is … The young people provide a strikingly fresh and imaginative view of their cosmopolitan London home … , the set is stunning … striking, original and passionate … you'd be a hard person indeed not to find it very moving.’
**** The Scotsman

‘Glowingly imaginative … dares us to believe in the existence of wonders on London streets.’
British Theatre Guide

‘An extraordinary achievement … The cast command the space brilliantly and the audience are instantly captivated by their tales … An absolute joy to watch.’
View From The Stalls

'Moving and powerful ... heartfelt performances.'
